As we age, sometimes we need a little extra help sprucing up, trimming stray bristles and making sure we're shipshape -- same goes for the 75-year-old USS LST 393.
The historical warship moored at Mart Dock downtown Muskegon is in need of some fixing up and is asking for volunteers to help. There will be a two-day volunteer fix-up weekend May 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We have a lot of projects we need help with” said museum board President Scott Grant. “You don’t have to be handy, you just have to be willing to lend a hand.”
There are several projects to work on from landscaping to building. All equipment needed will be supplied by the veteran museum, but anyone with their own tools will be welcomed.
And the museum board says that anyone who would like the stay the night is welcome -- you are permitted to park your car or RV in the lot and there are going to be about a dozen bunks aboard to sleep in. The bathroom and water on the ship should be functional by that time.
LST 393 will also provide rolls and coffee for breakfast and hot dogs for lunch for those volunteering to work.
The museum will open for tours April 29-30 and will only be open weekends through May 20. After May 20, LST 393 will be open seven days a week through mid-September. it will close for tours at the end of September.
For more information on what projects need to be done, check the USS LST 393 website.
Anyone interested in helping for any part of the weekend or with questions should contact Grant at 231-740-3503.
