A pair of bills introduced in Lansing on Tuesday make it illegal to point lasers at pilots. It is already a federal crime to shine lasers at aircraft, but state and local police cannot arrest anyone that does it, they have to alert the FBI.

The two bills would allow them to make arrest in cases where lasers are pointed at pilots, and make it a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The bills come three days after a laser was pointed into the cockpit of a plane approaching Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
