Many people in Cedar Springs say it is sad and disappointing to know someone desecrated a war memorial for a home town soldier killed in action.
“It is heart wrenching,” says American Legion Post 287 club room manager Barbara Ferguson. “I cannot imagine that would happen in our community.”
“Over the weekend thieves removed the helmet, replica rifle and dog tags from a Veterans Park memorial honoring Tim Brown. He was killed in action in 2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Police think the same thieves recorded by surveillance cameras stealing from the refreshment stand at Skinner Field also stripped the memorial.
“It’s not for sure it’s the same suspects but it was during the same time period,” says Kent County deputy Jason Kelly.
“And I think they ought to have their little hind ends kicked right over their shoulders,” says American Legion member Verna Smigiel. “I think they should be punished.”
The community donated $10,000 to have the memorial erected.
“The community built the memorial and we have vandals tearing it down,” says Ferguson. “It is horrible.”
