Hundreds, if not thousands of people marched in downtown Grand Rapids Saturday as they took part in the worldwide March for Science event, coinciding with Earth Day on April 22.
The event began with four brief speakers at the Courtyard Marriott on Fulton, then spilled out into the streets of GR. Organizers say the goal of the event was to support science and show the "impact and importance that science has on our lives."
Many held signs as they marched with slogans ranging from "Do you have polio? Neither do I! Thanks science!" to "Make the earth cool again."
The Grand Rapids March for Science was a part of a worldwide movement. Thousands of people were in Washington, as well as in hundreds of cities across the nation protested what they feel is a trend against using scientific evidence in government policymaking.
Organizers of the march in Washington encourages marchers to wear their lab coats, goggles, stethoscopes, field fear and other work clothes.
