One hour of your time could save up to three lives.

That's the reminder being pushed to the public by the organizers of the annual "Thanks for Giving" blood drive, which is put on by Michigan Blood.

Volunteer donors are always needed, but according to Michigan Blood, the need tends to be greater during this time of year.

"The need for blood never takes a holiday," said Carleen Crawford, director of Community Relations and Marketing for Michigan Blood.

"There are patients in the hospital today, accident victims, people undergoing surgery, people getting cancer treatment and they all need blood products, so they rely on volunteer donors in our community to make the blood available."

People who choose to become a volunteer donor, and give the gift of blood, will also receive a gift in return.

"To give thanks to the donors, we're offering Target and Amazon gift cards," said Crawford. "On Tuesday, Nov. 29, we're asking donors to bring in school supplies when they visit one of our donor centers.

"Not only will donors be able to give the gift of blood, but they can also give a gift that will be donated to those schools in need near of main donation centers across the state of Michigan."

Interested donors are welcome to walk-in and register, but are encouraged to call ahead and make an appointment so they can get through the registration process faster.

"We need to collect, on average, 400 units of blood each day to meet the needs of our hospital partners," said Crawford. "Our goals during blood drives like these are higher."
