Men’s Journal magazine recently listed Mackinac Island as one of the top 25 motorcycle vacation spots in the United States, along with North Georgia’s Hill Country, the Black Hills of South Dakota and the back roads of Asheville, N.C.
The problem? Mackinac Island doesn’t allow motorcycles.
The description said: “Take Michigan M-119 (or, the Tunnel of Trees road) through a thickly wooded canopy all the way to Harbor Springs. When you loop back to Mackinac Island on Lake Huron, unwind in the quaintness of this 3.8-square-mile corner of the world.’’
If you try to ride a motorcycle on Mackinac Island, your bike will be impounded and you’ll be paying a fine to get it out before being asked to take it off the Island.
“Motorcycle vacation spots?’’ asked Officer Justin Nowland of the Mackinac Police Department. “I don’t know how that happened, but it could have been a mistake and they could have meant Mackinaw City. It is on the Lower Peninsula side of the bridge. That could have been what they were talking about, but it’s certainly not Mackinac Island.’’
Nowland added: “I would not say we are one of the best motorcycle destinations.”
He said it would be an automatic ticket.
“I don’t know how much the fine would be, to be honest with you I don’t think we’ve ever had a motorcycle on the Island,’’ he said.
