The holiday shopping season is in full swing. And with it, the Salvation Army has kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign.

This year, the organization is working to meet a $1.65 million dollar Christmas Campaign goal. For the third consecutive year, members of the Grand Rapids Griffins are lending their support.

Monday, Griffins players and their significant others will ring bells at 3 downtown Grand Rapids locations. Major Norman Grainger, the Kent County coordinator for the Salvation Army, says the community partnership with the Griffins is invaluable.

Players will ring bells in front of the iconic red kettles, between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m at the following locations:

  • Outside Biggy Coffee on the corner of Pearl and Monroe Center
  • In front of Starbucks at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel on Monroe Avenue
  • In front of the Grand Rapids Police Department on Monroe Center

They will follow-up with the 3rd Annual ‘Red Kettle Game’ Friday, Dec. 1. The game will include a ceremonial puck drop, jersey auction and a brass band performance between periods. There will be red kettles prominently placed throughout the Van Andel Arena for those wishing to donate to the campaign.

The Salvation Army has 60 red kettles placed throughout the community this holiday season. Grainger says they also need volunteers to help ring bells.
