A search is underway Saturday morning after Battle Creek police were told a car went into the Kalamazoo River.

Officers were called at 4:44 a.m. by a motorist who told them he saw a car travel off Dickman Road and through a fence into the river near Capital Avenue Southwest.

Officers were unable to see a car and a search was underway. Officers used a tracking dog and have walked the shore.

Battle Creek firefighters prepare to launch a small boat Saturday near Jackson Street and Stringham Road to search for a car in the Kalamazoo River.

Police were joined by Battle Creek firefighters and divers from the Calhoun County Sheriff Department. Officials in Kalamazoo County also were alerted and a helicopter from the Michigan State Police was requested.

Police said the crash was reported in the same area where a car plunged into the river in October. That vehicle was found under the Washington Street bridge and the driver was rescued.
