U.S. Senator Gary Peters two amendments to the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act were approved Thursday by the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

"This legislation basically expands the ability for our local airports to use existing money in a way that they believe is necessary to make their airport more secure," Peters said.

The amendments would use existing funds collected from a passenger facility charge and airport improvement program to enhance security and safety measures within the public areas of local airports, including baggage claim, curbside pickup and ticketing counters.

The bill will move forward to the Senate for further review.
