State basketball finals in Special Olympics returning to Grand Rapids

The Special Olympics State Finals in basketball are returning to Grand Rapids this weekend.

The Special Olympics State Finals in basketball are returning to Grand Rapids this weekend.

More than 400 athletes from across Michigan are expected to compete. Special Olympics allows athletes with disabilities to showcase their skills but Coach Heidi Prior says it's the confidence building which is key.

"The kids are embraced and they are flying high and experiencing what an athlete, maybe a football player might be going through with high-fives in the hallways, that's what these kids are finally getting to experience," says Prior.

The finals will take place Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24 at Calvin College. Registration starts at noon on Friday and games begin at 1p.m.
