Just how dangerous are West Michigan road intersections? New data compiled by a group of Michigan attorneys is helping answer that question.
Based on information from the Michigan State Police, a yearly report recently was released by the Michigan Auto Law attorneys that equates "dangerous" intersections with the number of crashes at that location. Numerous intersections in West Michigan made the list for 2016, but one street specifically proved to be a major problem area.
Four crossroads on 28th Street made it to the top 100 of most dangerous intersections in Michigan, with a combined 265 crashes.
"With the way people have been driving every weekend that I've been out here, I've seen plenty of accidents," Dennis Shannon said. "I've seen people run out the road when it got a little wet."
Shannon is a sign holder for a retail store going out of business on 28th Street. He spends five hours a day waving a sign along one of the intersections deemed dangerous.
"I just can’t believe how people drive, honestly," Shannon said.
The four intersections are:
- 28th Street at Kalamazoo Avenue
- 28th Street at Breton Road
- 28th Street at Broadmoor Avenue
- 28th Street at I-96
"It's so busy -- we've grown so much in the 32 years that I've been here," Grand Rapids driver Jeanette Hunt, said. "I think maybe more traffic signals, maybe they might want to widen 28th Street; they've got to do something."
Other Grand Rapids-metro interchanges with the highest number of crashes include U.S. 131 and Wealthy Street with 87 crashes and U.S. 131 and Burton Street with 75 crashes.
There are other intersections in Grand Rapids that made the cut. To see the entire list of Michigan's dangerous intersections, visit the attorneys' table on the group's website.
