A Battle Creek man has died after a two-vehicle crash Friday in Pennfield Township.
Calhoun County Sheriff Department Detective Sgt. Steve Hinkley said the 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Hinkley said the man's name is not being released until all family members are notified.
The crash was reported at 1:01 p.m. on Bellevue Road west of Pine Lake Road. Deputies said the SUV driven by the man was eastbound and struck the rear of an eastbound United Parcel Service truck which had slowed to make a left turn into a driveway.
The UPS truck was spun around 180 degrees and slid off the north side of the roadway. The SUV turned onto its side.
The female driver of the UPS truck was not hurt. Another delivery van was brought to the scene and packages were moved from the damaged truck.
Hinkley said a witness told deputies that the SUV had passed him at an estimated 80 mph before the crash. The driver had to be extricated by firefighters from Pennfield and Emmett townships.
Hinkley said emergency workers at Bronson Battle Creek found a handgun that the man was carrying on the ambulance gurney when he arrived at the emergency room before he was transferred to Kalamazoo.
The crash remains under investigation.
