Driver killed while crossing the street after early morning crash

The driver involved in an early Sunday crash is dead and his passenger hospitalized.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning crash that killed one man.

It happened on Fruit Ridge Avenue, just south of 15 Mile just before 2 a.m. Sunday. A 41-year-old Jenison man was driving north on Fruit Ridge when he crossed the center line and left the roadway. The pick-up hit a driveway and flipped over -- landing on the passenger side in a ditch.

He and his female passenger were able to get out of the truck and attempted to get help at a home nearby -- no one was home.

At that point, a second vehicle stopped at the scene of the crash and the man stepped out into the road to speak to the driver of that vehicle. When that conversation ended, the 41-year-old man was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle with 4 people inside.

Authorities took the female passenger to the hospital for head injuries she sustained in the crash. No one else was injured in the crash.
