UPDATE: The names of those involved in the crash have now been identified. The suspect driver is 29-year-old male Sean Michael Barone , of Wayland. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in regards to Barone. The other driver was 22-year-old male Alexander Madison Wieland, of Plainwell.

Barone died from his injuries at Metro Hospital. Wieland was transported to Butterworth Hospital where he was treated for a severe leg injury and concussion-like symptoms.

(WAYLAND TOWNSHIP, MICH.) - One person was killed in a wrong way crash on U.S. 131 in Allegan County late Sunday, August 13.

The crash shut down both the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 131 to overnight traffic for about 3 hours. the crash happened near the 129th Avenue exit near Gun Lake Casino at 11:04 pm.

Allegan County Undersheriff Mike Larsen says deputies were responding to a call about a vehicle parked on the side of the road on U.S. 131, facing the wrong direction, and with no headlights on. But, Larsen says by the time deputies arrived, that vehicle had already left the scene and was going the wrong way on the highway.

The crash was between that car -- which was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes and another vehicle that was going southbound.

Undersheriff Larsen says the driver in the vehicle that was going to wrong way was killed in the head on crash. The other vehicle involved in the crash caught on fire and the driver was trapped inside until she was rescued by firefighters.

Allegan County dispatchers were not able to offer any details about the victims of the crash or the extent of their injuries. Michigan State Police dispatchers were not able to offer any information.

The crash closed the freeway for about three hours. The Michigan Department of Transportation sent out a news release saying the road had reopened around 2:15 a.m.
