One man is dead following a single-vehicle crash late Friday.
The Calhoun County Sheriff Department reported the crash about 11:20 p.m. in the 21000 block of Nine-Mile Road just outside of Burlington. When deputies arrived they found the vehicle partially engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished by firefighters from Burlington and Union City fire departments. Once the fire was out deputies found a man dead inside.
A preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle was speeding and left the roadway hitting a tree and partially ejecting the driver and then caught fire. Deputies also believe after talking to witnesses that alcohol, as well as excessive speed, were factors in the crash.
An autopsy is scheduled and deputies said they were withholding the name of the victim until positive identification is determined and family members are notified.
The accident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff department.
Deputies were assisted by Michigan State Police, Burlington Fire Department, Union City Fire Department, and the Marshall Area Firefighters Ambulance Authority.
