NCAA tournament: Jordan Poole's 3 at buzzer lifts Michigan past Houston

University of Michigan is going to Los Angeles!
Michigan guard Jordan Poole celebrates after scoring a 3-pointer to defeat Houston in the second round of the NCAA tournament at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, Kan., Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Michigan is going to Los Angeles.

And it has its most confident rookie to thank for it.

Freshman guard Jordan Poole canned a deep 3 from the right side of the floor at the buzzer to push Michigan, the No. 3 seed in the West Region, into the Sweet 16 with a 64-63 win over No. 6 Houston in the NCAA tournament.

BOX SCORE

Michigan will play the winner of North Carolina/Texas A&M on Thursday at the Staples Center.

The shot came after U-M faced a two-point deficit with less than 4 seconds to play and after the Wolverines were brutal from outside all night long.

After Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman missed a driving layup that would've tied the game with 3.9 seconds to play, the Wolverines sent Devin Davis to the foul line down a pair. But Davis missed both. Moritz Wagner collected the rebound and called timeout, allowing for one more shot.

Isaiah Livers inbounded the ball to Abdur-Rahkman at midcourt, who took a few dribbles before finding Poole on the wing.

The freshman from Milwaukee buried the shot from roughly 30 feet, through contact, as the horn sounded.

Michigan was just 7 of 29 from deep before Poole's final shot.

The Wolverines struggled with their shot all night long, going 21 of 59 (35.6 percent) from the floor. But despite playing from behind for most of the second half, U-M will advance to its second straight Sweet 16 and fourth under John Beilein.

Wagner and Abdur-Rahkman both finished with 12 for the Wolverines (30-7), while Charles Matthews finished his night with 11.

The Wolverines held Houston star Rob Gray to 8 of 22 shooting, though Gray did score 23 points.

Abdur-Rahkman wound up 4 of 15 from from the floor and 0 of 6 from 3-point range.

But Poole's shot was all the mattered.
