Wladimir Galindo doubled and singled twice as the South Bend Cubs topped the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-4 on Friday.
Wyatt Short allowed a run, but got Blaise Salter to ground out with runners on second and third to end the game for his second save of the season.
Down 2-1, the Cubs took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. Jhonny Pereda hit an RBI single and then scored on a two-run single by Yeiler Peguero en route to the two-run lead.
The Cubs later tacked on a run in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, Alberto Mineo drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring D.J. Wilson, while Galindo hit an RBI single in the eighth.
West Michigan saw its comeback attempt come up short after Josh Lester scored on a ground out in the ninth inning to cut the South Bend lead to 6-4.
Marc Huberman (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief while West Michigan starter Spenser Watkins (1-1) took the loss in the Midwest League game.
South Bend took advantage of some erratic West Michigan pitching, drawing a season-high six walks in its victory.
For the Whitecaps, Anthony Pereira homered and doubled.
Despite the loss, West Michigan is 4-2 against South Bend this season.
