DETROIT - The rebuild of the Detroit Tigers will be painful and the first significant sign of that was Sunday's announced tickets sold.

The Tigers announced 14,848 tickets sold for the first game of a split doubleheader on Sunday. That represents the smallest crowd for a Tigers home game since 12,415 on May 2, 2006.

It didn't help that the Tigers were playing on Easter, or that the temperature at first pitch was 36 degrees.

The Tigers announced a sellout crowd of 42,516 for the home opener on Friday. The opener was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was postponed a day due to rain.

It'll be interesting to see what the crowds are like in the coming weeks.

The Tigers averaged 28,662 fans at home over 81 dates last season for a total of 2,321,599. Attendance at Comerica Park has declined for four consecutive seasons.

The Tigers drew a Comerica Park-record 3,202,645 fans in 2008.
