Tickets for the opener have been on sale since January. Opening Day has been a sellout every season since Comerica Park opened in 2000.

It appears that low expectations on the field for the Detroit Tigers could spell lower attendance for the organization as those figures continue to dip.

The Tigers ticket office said Tuesday tickets are still available for the 2018 season opener on March 29 at 1:10 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Last year’s opener was the only sellout of the season, compared to 41 sellouts in 2008, according to MLB.com. Last year’s sellout was achieved just days before the opener.

Ron Colangelo, vice president of communications for the Tigers, said Feb. 27 was too early to project whether or not the season opener would be a sellout.

Tigers’ attendance has been in on a steady decline each year since 2013, when the attendance reached 3,083,397, according to mlb.com. In 2017, the total attendance was 2,321,599. This season, withJustin Verlander, J.D. Martinez, Justin Upton, Ian Kinsler and Cameron Maybin gone, fans have only up-and-coming players and an aging Miguel Cabrera to look forward to.

In 2017, the Tigers finished 16th in home attendance at 28,661 per game, according to MLB.com, despite the team losing 98 games.

In 2016, the Tigers ranked 13th with an average of 31,173 at Comerica Park per game, which was only behind Central Division power Kansas City in their division.

In 2015, the Tigers, a contender for the American League pennant, were ninth at 33,654 per game. The previous year they were seventh at 36,014. Only the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were better in the American League.

In 2013, the Tigers averaged sixth at 38,066 and only trailed New York and Texas in the AL.
