With their 23-man roster due by 5 p.m., the Detroit Red Wings announced this morning that forward Anthony Mantha has been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), and defenseman Niklas Kronwall has been put on injured reserve.

Mantha’s demotion means forward Andreas Athanasiou will be on the roster for Thursday's opener at Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m., FSD).

Athanasiou, 22, contributed nine goals among 14 points in 37 appearances with the Wings last season. He also scored during a five-game appearance in the playoffs. Although he averaged just nine minutes per game -- lowest among the team’s skaters -- Athanasiou used his speed to create scoring chances out of nowhere.

Kronwall is dealing with a bad left knee, and there are concerns both about his short-term and long-term availability.
