Special Olympics athletes from across the state gathered at Calvin College on Saturday, Dec. 9 to prepare for the USA Games in Seattle this summer.

Athletes and their parents spent time meeting their coaches and the Special Olympics MI staff who will accompany them at the games in July.

From a meet and greet time in the morning, to informational meetings and actual training time later in the day, the excitement is certainly building among the athletes who will compete at the national level.

WZZM spoke with two athletes, a power lifter from Kalamazoo and a swimmer from Holland, both were thrilled with the news that they would be competing at this level.

This is the first time this training has taken place in Grand Rapids. Forty-six Special Olympics athletes from Michigan will take part in the USA Games July 16 in Seattle.
