Local non-profit connects West Michigan families to computers

Facing a national laptop shortage, more West Michigan families are turning to Comprenew for affordable, refurbished computers and devices

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- Comprenew is Michigan based non-profit organization that recycles and refurnishes old technology. This summer, they created the Connect All Michigan Program to offer free and less expensive computers to low-income students and families who do not have technology in their home.

Anna Cutler is a customer service coordinator and community outreach manager at Comprenew. She says they have seen a huge influx since the coronavirus pandemic forced adults and students into their homes, and in front of a computer screen.

"Kids need computers, kids need devices, you come to us we're helping those kids, we're helping those families," Cutler says.

Through the Connect All Michigan Program, Cutler says they have connect 50 computers to families so far.

"Connect All Michigan Program specifically targets low income families with students in the area. They call me, and I go though the application process with them and once the completed application gets process, typically it takes about 24 hours. Then they either get approved for a free or a discounted laptop or desktop computer."

If families do not have access to transportation to pick up their refurbished computers, Comprenew offers a free delivery service.

Despite having a great deal of support from both residents and corporations across the state, to keep programs going, including the Connect All Michigan Program, Comprenew is always accepting old computers and devices to recycle and refurbish.

In August, the Associated Press reported a nationwide shortage of laptop computers, citing that "the delays started in the spring and intensified because of high demand and disruptions of supply chains," according to the AP.

"Laptops! And if you have chromebooks if you have them anywhere please donate them," says Cutler. "There's definitely an increase in people donating in order to support us and it has been fantastic because without that it would be so hard to give away that many devices."
