A coronal mass ejection is an ejection of high energy particles from the surface of the sun. If they interact with our atmosphere, they can completely disrupt radio communications. If they interact with the metals in our electronics, it could shut down the entire grid.

Senator Gary Peters is raising the alarm to this possibility. "You could be without power for perhaps up to a year... if it were to occur today, Lloyds of London estimates it could be a $2.6 trillion impact on the economy."

Senator Peters has introduced legislation to prepare for such an event, but what else can be done?
