Thousands of people woke up Tuesday, Dec. 5 without power after storms and heavy wind caused outages overnight.
One of the hardest hit areas was the West Side of Grand Rapids. We received calls to our information center about the widespread power outages and emergency vehicles.
One caller even said a tree had fallen on both a power line and a home near the corner of Broadway and 5th Street. We drove to the scene and it was too dark to see whether the tree actually landed on the house, but Consumers Energy workers did confirm that it knocked down wires in the area.
Consumers Energy workers also urged people to stay away from downed lines and to be aware of debris during the Tuesday morning commute.
As of 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, more than 6,000 customers in Kent County were without power. Nearly 1,000 in Ottawa County were without power, and more than 500 in Muskegon County were without power.
