NORTH MUSKEGON, MICH. - Fans say don't knock it till you try it. Bernie O's in North Muskegon is famous for a pizza so unique you might be afraid to taste it.
Their Twist pizza is putting them on the map with a flavor combination so outrageous you won't find it anywhere else.
At Bernie O's in North Muskegon there is no question about what they are famous for. "Definitely the Twist we sell it about 8 times more than any other pizza," said co-owner Heather Oliver.
So what's on this unique best seller?
"Special yellow sauce, it has crispy chicken, bacon, and then it has a mozz-prov cheese on it, that's baked. After it gets baked it gets fresh pineapple, tomato, banana pepper, jalapeno and then a coil of homemade ranch," explained Heather.
Not so sure you like the sound of that combination? Some veteran diners offer some advice: "Don't take anything off of it. It's the compliment of the sweet and the hot and the spicy and the ranch cools it down. When I first heard jalapeno peppers on a pizza, no way. So you have to take it the way they made the recipe, because if you alter it you are not getting true taste of it," said one diner.
"It's so different, its so unique, that most people read the ingredients, they look at it and most people are not real willing to try it. Through a lot of marketing and a lot of sampling it became what it is now: our best selling pizza," said co-owner Adam Oliver. New fans join the unique pizza-lovers club every day.
"It was good, I always look for things that aren't your standard pizza, I'm not just a pepperoni guy or whatever so it was really good," said someone trying the Twist for the first time.
"We have a lot of different specialty pies. People even come in and say do you have regular pizza?" said Heather. From Tater pizza to hot wing pizza, to a pizza created from their favorite dip, you can sample them all during Bernie O's lunch buffet.
Named for Heather's dad, Bernie O's is a living legacy. Decades ago the building that houses Bernie O's was a general store, then several short-lived restaurants before the Twist guaranteed Bernie O's staying power.
"They've made me proud and my husband proud, we are all proud of them," said Adam's mom.
Bernie O's is one of a kind and it's something that makes Muskegon different. "Fifteen years ago we started putting ranch on a pizza, no one was doing anything like that," said Oliver. And the rest is delicious history.
