Taste Of My Town: D'Arts Donuts

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Everyone has their go-to recipe for parties and gatherings. That recipe that everyone asks you to make time and time again. For Adam Ouelette, that recipe was handed down through the generations, starting with his great-grandmother. Her specialty? Donuts.

Fast-forward a few years to Adam in college, finding himself making donuts for all his friends. He decided to turn the decadent donut recipe into a business in 2015 with a food truck.

"We started last June in Grand Rapids out of our food truck," says Ouelette. "After ArtPrize, our phone was ringing off the hook with people asking us to do their bar mitzvahs, weddings, company picnics, things like that and business got so big that we were actually able to facilitate moving into a brick and mortar."

That brick and mortar is named D'arts Donuts, after Ouelette's dog D'artanian, and opened earlier this summer. The place has been a busy one, not only because the donuts are tasty but also unique.

"Probably our most popular one is our whiskey bacon. We have a maple whiskey infused butter glaze that we top with candied thick-cut bacon," says Ouelette. "We also have a lemon blueberry which we use fresh Michigan blueberries from West Michigan farms."

And the unique concoctions don't end there. Here are a few of the fun flavors to try: PB & J, chocolate-covered potato chip, pumpkin spice, turtle, and lemon lavender.

"I have not tasted them all over the world but this is way up there," says a local diner.

"The chocolate salted caramel looks pretty good and the turtle so I'm going to get one of those for sure," says another patron.

D'arts Donuts also offers private catering for special occasions. They are located at 1444 Lake Drive SE in Grand Rapids. Find more information and business hours at their Facebook page here.
