SOUTH HAVEN, MICH. - There are so many beautiful and unique beach towns in West Michigan that are just a short drive away. We headed to Phoenix Street Cafe in South Haven to see why this mainstay has visitors and locals alike coming back year after year.
"This is the place to be here in the summertime," said a Phoenix Street regular. And the place is packed. Phoenix Street Cafe attracts visitors and locals alike with a little something for everyone, including the classics. "I like it because I can get normal pancakes and bacon," said a young diner.
They also boast stand out benedicts and quite a few meatless options. "We love it because it has interesting things on the menu that you don't get in other restaurants around," said another diner. "We have great eggs benedicts, crab cakes, we have stuffed french toast with raspberry cream cheese, cinnamon roll pancakes are very good if you have a sweet tooth. And chicken and waffles, awesome chicken and waffles," said longtime server Dolly Harris.
We met lots of visitors from Ohio and Illinois, as well as folks from Muskegon heading out of town. "This is our favorite stop on the way to Chicago," he said.
"I swear every year it gets busier and busier. People are started to know about our little town of South haven here. They love it, more and more people come every year," said Dolly.
It's become a family tradition for these vacationers. "We love South Haven. We've been coming here for three years now. We come every July 4th because it's my birthday and we celebrate my birthday here," said another visitor.
No matter why they come, Chef Danny wants to keep them coming back. And he will with dishes like the whiskey braised vegetable hash that uses fresh veggies from a local farmer, some Danny even grows in his home garden.
"We love people. We love the customers. In fact my sticker stays MPH: making people happy, we do our best to make people happy," said Dolly.
