Learn how to help the homeless this holiday season

Holland Rescue Mission

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The holiday season often has us looking for way we can help people who are suffering in some way.  In particular, it's difficult to see folks who are homeless, bracing themselves against the cold, not sure where they will sleep at night or receive their next meal.  Rachel Neal joined us from Holland Rescue Mission with some practical ways to help the homeless this holiday season.

If you’d like to help fill holiday bags with necessary items for the Women’s Emergency Shelter residents, the list includes:
Underwear—all sizes and styles (leave separate due to sizes)
$20 Gift Card—Meijer (leave separate, will be passed out directly)
Full Size Lotion
Full Size Body Wash
Poof/Loofah
Full Size Shampoo
Chap Stick
Manicure/Pedicure set
Individual Packs of Purse Tissues
Fashion Scarf (as opposed to warm winter scarf)
Slippers or Fun Socks
Devotional Book and/or Journal
Pen
Picture Frame, Small Photo Book, or Pocket Planner Calendar                                                     
Small Game or Puzzle Book
Pack of Gum
Full Size Candy Bar

The Men’s Emergency Shelter needs:
Socks –ankle/crew style, white and black (leave separate due to sizes)
Underwear—all sizes, briefs and boxers (leave separate due to sizes)
T-shirts—all sizes (leave separate due to sizes)
$20 Gift Card—Meijer (leave separate, will be passed out directly)
Pair of Gloves—warm and sturdy
Hat—knit style for men
Full Size Candy Bar
Pack of Gum
Shaving Cream
Pack of Razors
Chap stick
Deodorant—full size
Hand Lotion
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Small Game or Puzzle Book
Devotional Book
Pen

All donations can be dropped off at the Gateway Center Administration Offices by December 20th at 661 E. 24th Street, Suite 300, Holland, MI 49423.  The shelter is also in need of women’s and children’s  coats, hats, scarves, gloves/mittens.  These items may be dropped off at the Family Hope Ministry Center at 356 Fairbanks Avenue, Holland, MI 49423.  

The Rescue Mission is also in need of items for the Christmas Store, including:
Scotch Tape
Wrapping Paper (Christmas themed)
Christmas Gift Bags (variety of sizes)
Bows/Ribbons
Gift Cards ($10 or $20 amounts only)
