GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Apple picking is a tradition in most households around West Michigan, and many orchards are packed this time of year because of the bumper apple crop produced this year. Schwallier's Country Basket in Sparta is thrilled about their apples, saying they're much sweeter than in recent memory.
"This years crop is one of the best we've ever seen," says Philip Schwallier, owner of Schwallier's Country Basket. "The last time I saw a crop like this was 1978. Its been a long time."
Philip is a fifth generation fruit farmer in northern Kent County and has changed the orchard, adding several activities for families like an animal barn, corn maze, and wagon rides. Apple cider and donuts are available in the store as well.
The orchard offers several varieties of apples and a u-pick option. For a list of apple varieties and when they are available, head to their website here.
Schwallier's Country Basket is located at 1185 9 Mile Road in Sparta, Michigan.
