GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Organizers of the annual ArtPrize competition say their commemorative poster for the 2012 event is intended to "play with the eye" of the person viewing it.

They unveiled the poster Monday afternoon at the La Fontsee Gallery on Lake Drive SE.

The poster was inspired by the "Op-Art" tradition, and is described as a "graphic, pattern-driven style."

The poster has a series of black and white stripes going diagonally from the upper left to the lower right.  The logo for Artprize is depicted in the middle of the image, with its black and white stripes going from the upper right to the lower left.

The style is "dancing the line between two and three dimensions, to make viewers look, look again, and stretch their minds to understand what they see," according to the statement released by ArtPrize organizers.

"The same senses of tension, fluidity, and changing perceptions are what make the ArtPrize experience so challenging and rewarding," according to the statement.

The ArtPrize competition runs from September 19 to October 7.
