In the year 2000, Iyanla was named one of the "100 most influential Black Americans" by Ebony magazine, but shortly thereafter, her life completely fell apart after her talk show, "Iyanla," was canceled. She lost everything, including her home, her marriage, her multimillion-dollar book deals, her fortune and her daughter, Gemmia, who died after battling cancer. She contemplated suicide in the aftermath of her daughter's death.

Then in 2007 Iyanla and her husband divorced and for years, this relationship expert says she felt like a fraud because she wasn't able to save her marriage. "All things are lessons that God would have us learn," Iyanla says. "When we got married, we had a no-out clause. ... But he changed his mind." Looking back, Iyanla says she needed to experience this pain to eventually find peace.

From her life's experiences she has uncovered her life's purpose, discovered the power that lies within and recovered her authentic self. Iyanla Vanzant has emerged as a living testament to the value in life's valleys and the power of acting on faith. The best part is, she teaches what she has learned.
