KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Theresa Lockhart's funeral services have been set. She was a Schoolcraft Spanish teacher who disappeared in May -- five months after her disappearance, her husband Christopher Lockhart, confessed to her murder.
Lockhart's funeral will be held on Monday, Dec. 4 at 10:30 a.m at St. Joseph Catholic Church, located at 936 Lake Street in Kalamazoo. Her family will greet visitors beginning one hour before mass in church. A graveside service will be held at Resurrection Cemetery in Wyoming at 2:30 p.m.
Lockhart was last seen May 18 -- her body was found Oct. 24 after her husband killed himself in their home. He left a note confessing to her murder and directed authorities to her body in woods west of Swan Creek.
Lockhart is survived by her mother, Loretta Huyge of Grand Rapids; her sister, Joan Mullowney of Victoria, BC Canada; her stepchildren, Jonathan and Madeline Lockhart; and her stepmother, Dovia (Gene) Huyge of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Huyge and younger brother Richie. Lockhart will be remembered by several aunts, uncles and cousins, according to her obituary posted on Stegenga Funeral Home's website.
Theresa Lockhart attended Chime Elementary School in Kalamazoo, St. John Vianney in Wyoming and Kelloggsville High School. She got a bachelor's degree from Aquinas College in 1995, where she double majored in Spanish and business. She received a Masters degree in education from Aquinas College and Spanish from Western Michigan University. According to Lockhart's obituary, she was working towards getting a doctorate degree in Spanish.
"Theresa was a passionate K-12 Spanish teacher in both public and private schools in many different districts," her obituary states. She was also an adjunct professor at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and a published poet.
Lockhart enjoyed volunteering at her local Humane Society too. Memorial contributions can be make in Lockhart's memory to the Kalamazoo Humane Society, located at 4239 S. Westnedge Avenue, in Kalamazoo.
