Handwritten messages honor veterans in Byron Center

Tanger Outlet Mall unveiled a new American flag mural on Veterans Day.

BYRON CENTER, MICH. - A special mural is on display at Tanger Outlets in Byron Center thanking veterans for their service to our nation.

It was unveiled Saturday morning. People were invited to write messages of appreciation to honor those who served.

If you look closely you can see that the mural is an American flag made up of images of veterans provided by their loved ones. Shoppers were then invited to write messages of gratitude.

Carol Vanderpols of Grand Rapids sent a photo of her father to be included in the mural. He is a World War II veteran now living with Alzheimer's.

Vanderpols said these days her father can remember his time in the service better than what happened two weeks ago. She said Saturday's event was an opportunity for them to focus on what he can remember.

The event also included a moment of silence to remember those who served.  It was well-attended by dozens of people, as well as several veterans who served in different wars.
