Special visit: Griffins players hang out with patients at Helen DeVos

Griffins visit Helen DeVos

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A few kids at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids were visited by some special guests today -- Grand Rapids Griffins players!

A couple of hockey players stopped by to hang out with the children, as they do every month -- and as cool as it is for the kids, it's pretty great for player too.

"It helps us make their day a little better and gives them a little bit of hope," explained goalie Tom McCollum. "At the same time, it helps us a lot too. I mean, we get to see the courage that these kids have and the things they have to fight through everyday -- it's very inspirational for us."

"It makes a huge difference," said Rhys VanDemark, a child life specialist at Helen DeVos. "The days get long here the kids get tired -- they're fighting big battles and sometimes a little pick-me-up like an autograph from a professional hockey player is a really cool thing."

Detroit Red Wings Goalie Jimmy Howard's foundation gives the children's hospital 4 season tickets every year to hand out to the children.
