Ballpark foods that won't strike out your diet

Enjoying ballpark food without the extra calories

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - It's opening week on the 13 Morning News, and if you're planning to hit the ballpark soon, you don't have to strike out on your diet!

WZZM 13 Health Reporter Valerie Lego explains a few healthy choices that just might have you cheering!

First choice for ballpark snacking: peanuts. They are high in protein and fiber and they might even fill you up enough so that you don't want anything else. You have to crack them open, so you need to work a little harder for your snack and won't "mindlessly" eat as many.

However, keep in mind, an 8 oz bag can have over 800 calories. The serving size for peanuts is still two to three ounces.

You can also wash them down with a couple of beers -- but, make sure to choose light beer and in the can or bottle if possible because you can control the calorie count which is about 100 calories depending on the brand. If you go for draft beer then understand you are drinking way more than that.

And if you need a hotdog, just be sure not to load it up with toppings. A plain dog on a bun is about 300 calories compared to a chili cheese dog which can be 700.

If you have a sweet tooth, the best thing is your classic licorice. It's 100 calories for three pieces.

The calories do add up, but if you make wise choices you're not going to totally ruin your diet. A cheat day every now and then isn't going to hurt you -- just try not to go overboard.
