Paws With A Cause assistance dogs honor puppy raiser

Paws with a Cause honors puppy raiser

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Members of the Paws with a Cause community took a moment to pause themselves today as they remembered a long-time puppy raiser.

Nearly 25 dogs and their raisers formed an honor guard that lined the sidewalk of the Metcalf & Jonkhoff funeral home in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, July 18.

The gesture was for 84-year-old Peter Luce.

Luce passed away on Sunday. He and his wife Kay raised puppies for Paws With A Cause and hosted more than a dozen future assistance dogs and breeding stock dogs in their home.

Paws With A Cause enhances the independence and quality of life for people with disabilities with custom-trained assistance dogs.

Vicki Lovelace is one of those recipients whose hearing dog Rufus was raised by Peter and Kay. "These dogs are so important to the people who get them because they give us a lot of safety and security for myself especially and Rufus comes and tells me when the doorbell or the phone rings," she said.

You may remember our Val Lego was also a puppy raiser for Paws With a Cause. She raised CJ over the last year.

CJ is now in her second stage of training at a Michigan correctional facility.
