Mercy Health Comprehensive Breast Centers Ease Anxiety During Breast Cancer Journey

When a patient returns for recommend testing (diagnostic mammogram / ultrasound) by the radiologist from their screening mammogram, the Mercy Health Comprehensive Breast Centers offer same day access to all diagnostics for determination of breast disease. Called RapidResults™, it's part of the unique service provided by Mercy Health Comprehensive Breast Centers to help patients stay informed and begin treatment without delay and with less anxiety.

RapidResults is supported by a team of dedicated, board certified breast radiologists. Their goal is to address a woman's anxiety by helping them get the answers they need right away so that she can begin the path to treatment – and healing – immediately.

RapidResults includes a diagnostic mammogram, diagnostic ultrasound or 3D mammography, and biopsy. The total time between diagnostic mammogram and biopsy results is three business days or less. Surgery, if needed, can be scheduled within 10 business days.

During this process, the patient is introduced to a nurse navigator, a nurse dedicated to caring for patients with breast cancer. Mary Miller, RN, is a nurse navigator at Mercy Health Comprehensive Breast Center in Muskegon. She helps patients navigate their cancer journey, from initial diagnosis to post-treatment.

"Patients have fear and uncertainty when faced with a breast cancer or disease diagnosis," explains Miller. "My job is to help them emotionally, direct them to accurate information and resources, and coordinate all of their care, from diagnosis to surgery and treatment to follow-up care."

Miller becomes the point person who sees everything a patient is going through. She'll typically work with a patient for about one year – the duration of the breast cancer journey.

NavigationPlus breast cancer treatment navigation works closely with all treatment providers in the Muskegon/Lakeshore and Grand Rapids area such as surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and others.

Any provider referring a patient into the Mercy Health Comprehensive Breast Center system for screening, diagnosis or treatment may access NavigationPlus.
