GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Being a part of the LGBT community can be hard at any age, but for some seniors, it's been a struggle for their entire lives.
The Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan is starting to put a greater focus on those seniors.
The two year project is funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. It seeks to directly reduce isolation of LGBT seniors and to improve services and care provided to them.
As part of the project AAAWM is building relationships with the local LGBT community and identifying LGBT-affirming health service providers that can help members of that community. AAAWM will also create a pathway for LGBT senior to access those providers when they conact the agency.
At the end of two years a how-to manual will be created to help other area agencies on aging throughout Michigan to use in staff training and learning how to identify LGBT-affirming services in their own communities.
