PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 60-year-old Grand Haven-area man drowned Sunday afternoon in Lake Michigan.
Police, firefighters and the Coast Guard responded around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, to the north pier of Pigeon Lake on a report of a person struggling in the water, according to an Ottawa County Sheriff's Office news release.
Lake conditions, which were forecast to be hazardous at least a day in advance, were rough -- police say wave heights were about 5 feet.
The man and his brother were body surfing the waves near a sandbar when one of the two began to struggle, police say. The man's brother tried to swim the two back to shore, but a rip current made it hard to swim back.
A short time later, the man's body was pulled from the water.
The incident remains under investigation.
