Celebrate National Healthcare Decision Day with Emmanuel Hospice

The best way to start is to have a conversation with yourself, a loved one, or even calling Emmanuel Hospice.

No one likes to think of the day when they're unable to speak for themselves. However, for many that day can quickly become reality.

Today is National Healthcare Decision Day, and Sara Lowe, Executive Director at Emmanuel Hospice, sat down to tell us about the importance of creating an Advance Directive life plan.

An Advance Directive is a two-part decision that determines how you will be cared for in the event you are unable to speak for yourself. The first decision is choosing WHO you trust to make sure your wishes are carried out, and the second is determining WHAT your care preferences are.

Nearly 80% of people do not have an Advance Directive in place, but no matter your age, everyone should expect the unexpected for peace of mind.

The best way to start is to have a conversation with yourself, a loved one, or even calling Emmanuel Hospice. Try these three simple thought starters:

  1. Who would I trust to fulfill my wishes?
  2. What kind of treatment would I want if something happens to me?
  3. What would I want my friends and family to do, say or arrange in a specific way?

Want to hear more about Advance Directives? Emmanuel Hospice will be hosting a free event titled “Conversations on Living and Dying” Tuesday, April 17, at GVSU from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
