New phone scam targeting businesses soliciting Toys for Tots donations

A business in Lowell said a man called asking for a $150 donation for Toys for Tots. The man eventually hung up when he didn't get anywhere.

A new scam is targeting local businesses and taking advantage of Toys for Tots.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, a business in Lowell said a man called asking for a $150 donation for Toys for Tots. The man eventually hung up when he didn't get anywhere.

Leaders at Toys for Tots say they never call homes or businesses soliciting donations.

"It makes me very upset, this is a great program and people using and abusing the Toys for Tots name and trying to take advantage," says Craig Claxton with Toys for Tots.

Tina Dickerman, who works at Optec, took the call.

"It's awful, you are playing on people's desire to help out kids in a time of year when there are a lot of children that are less fortunate or families that aren't able to provide so you are kind of playing on the emotions of people and that is really low," says Dickerman.
