You’ve probably heard about osteoporosis, but do you know what causes it? What about the factors that could put you at risk for developing osteoporosis?

Dr. Arashdeep Litt, internal medicine physician with Spectrum Health Medical Group, discussed what osteoporosis is, and the importance of maintaining good bone health.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically because of hormonal changes, or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. It is a very common disease; 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass.

Treatment varies on a case by case basis and can depend on your risk factors.
