GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - How much does it cost to get your kid out on the field? According to U of M Health, the average yearly cost for a kid to play sports is $302.
"It's a big issue," Grand Haven High senior, Calista Rockwell told 13 On Your Side on Friday.
So she along with three of her classmates are hoping to fix that. Bucs 2 Bucs, a student group, was created to collect gently used sports equipment and money to off-set some sport fees.
"If you have the money to play sports, you never think about the kids that don't," Charles Franklin a member of Bucs 2 Bucs said.
"I've for sure have seen kids decide not play sports that have no cuts such as like lacrosse just because the fees are so high," Megan Jarvis said. "Especially for gear and then take on another $150 for pay to play, it's just not possible for some students."
The students have set up donation boxes inside At Home Realty in Grand Haven and the high school. Small steps, to give kids an opportunity some of these students struggled with themselves.
"I'm on the golf team," Rockwell said. "Personally that has been a problem for me too like it is an expensive sport and it's cool that I can help out people in the future."
Bucs 2 Bucs will be hosting a field-day fundraiser, later this month.
