MACKINAW CITY, Mich. — A remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) was deployed to assess the damage on utility cables that leaked coolant in the Mackinac Straits.
In the beginning of April, 550 gallons of coolant were leaked into the straits from submerged cables that carry electricity between Michigan's two peninsulas.
The Mackinac Straits connect Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.
The Coast Guard later said that there was no evidence of pollution in the water. And clean up started shortly after the leak.
The ROV will obtain underwater imagery of the cables and provide the United States Coast Guard with information about how to deal with the damaged cables.
The American Transmission Company continues to extract mineral oil from the damaged cables.
