Muskegon beauticians make monthly stop at Rescue Mission

Once a month, two women go to the Muskegon Rescue Mission and give the men free haircuts.

Three times a day, homeless men from around Muskegon are attracted to the Muskegon Rescue Mission for a hot meal.

And Friday was no exception.

A long line formed by the door to the cafeteria. Men who in some cases are just down on their luck.

And before the food had a chance to settle in their stomachs, Muskegon beauticians Michelle Olsen and Caitlyn Hiner were presenting them with a Christmas gift bag.

Among the 15 items in each bag were warm socks, hat and comb. And each of the men also received an invitation for a free haircut.

It's something Olsen and Hiner have been doing at the mission once a month for nearly one year.

"It is good to spread love and share happiness," said Hiner.

"They house 60 guys and we're willing to cut all of them," added Olsen.

Both women say it's during the cuts the men open up about their struggles and the events that resulted in them not having a place to call home.

"Everybody has a story and everybody has a struggle," said Hiner. "Everybody goes through something."

The conversations become an opportunity for Hiner and Olsen to share hope, love and encourage the men.

"Even the homeless people got hearts and feelings," said Delvin Harris, one of ten men on the receiving end of a haircut.

"We just fell down on our luck," added Harris. "It's not falling down that's the problem it's getting back up, and that's what we're going to do."

"We get to share our stories and that's so special to me," said Hiner. "I can be a part of their story and they can be a part of mine."

"It just makes us all better," added Olsen.
