Prime suspect in fatal Muskegon shooting is dead

Cpt. Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said that the prime suspect is dead in the shooting that left one dead and one injured.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The 27-year-old suspect in an early Sunday morning shooting in Muskegon is dead, according the Cpt. Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

A 29-year-old Muskegon man and a 25-year-old Muskegon woman were shot just before 7:30 a.m. on April 22. The shooting took place near Merrill Avenue and 5th Street.

The 29-year-old man was killed in the shooting, and the woman was taken to the hospital in fair condition.

Police believe that the man may have driven his wife from their house in West Olive to Muskegon where he then shot the 29-year-old man and 25-year-old woman.

The suspect then drove him and his wife back to West Olive. Both the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and the Holland Department of Public Safety responded to the scene at their house in West Olive Estates.

The man emerged from the house holding a gun to his wife's head.

Officers asked the man to drop his weapon, and he did not comply. Law enforcement then engaged the man and shot and killed him.

The shooting is believed to be domestic related, and is not suspected to be a random act. Preliminary information indicates that a domestic dispute proceeded the shooting incident.

Robert German, the attorney for the suspect's wife, said on Sunday afternoon, "This situation is something that could have prevented and should have been prevented."

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident in West Olive and police in Muskegon ar investigating the shooting.
