Train derailment causes major closure on 28th Street in Wyoming

The derailment was reported around 9:30 p.m. Witnesses say it sounded like an electrical breaker exploding.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department now knows what caused a train to derail at 28th Street and U.S. 131 just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Deputies say two engines pulling the train overturned when they reached a section of track that had been washed out due to heavy rain and snow melt.

Two railroad employees were hurt. One was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries -- the other was treated at the scene.

The train derailed from 28th Street to 32nd Street. 28th Street was closed between U.S. 131 and Buchanan Avenue until 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses say it sounded like an electrical breaker exploding.

Crews from Young's Environmental Cleanup, Inc. and Wyoming Public Works are working together to clean up the mess left behind. An unknown amount of fuel was spilled from the engine.

The incident remains under investigation and the public is being asked to avoid the area.
