Woman killed after hitting deer in Gaines Township

The eastbound lanes of 68th Street were closed for more than two hours while deputies investigated.

UPDATE: The woman who died in the crash has been identified as 18-year-old Elana Nhu Tran. The other person involved in the crash is Cheri Baumgardner, 45.

ORIGINAL: One woman is dead after crashing into a deer Monday morning in Gaines Township.

According to the Kent County Sheriff's Department, the Gaines Township woman was driving east on 68th Street near Patterson Avenue around 9 a.m. Nov. 13, when a deer ran into the road.

The woman hit the deer and it crashed through her windshield. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another car also hit the deer and left the road. That driver was not hurt.

The eastbound lanes of 68th Street were closed for more than two hours while deputies investigated. The road opened back up around 11:15 a.m.

The woman's name has not yet been released.
