Foster Loyer scores 40; ends West Ottawa's season

Foster Loyer finished his high school career in spectacular style.

The 6-foot senior guard, who is headed to Michigan State, scored 40 points to lead Clarkston to its second straight Class A state championship on Saturday, an overwhelming 81-38 victory over Holland West Ottawa in the Breslin Center.

Loyer, who took only one shot in the fourth quarter, hit 14 of 19 shots, including 6 of 11 3-pointers, and chipped in seven assists.

West Ottawa (25-3) simply had no answer for Loyer, the 2018 winner of the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award.

As he did in the semifinal when he scored 42 points, Loyer set the tone from the start. He drilled a 3-pointer on the game’s first possession and scored 10 points in the first quarter as Clarkston (26-1) took a 19-6 lead. Along the way he passed Dane Fife as the school’s all-time leading scorer and No. 11 in state history.

The second quarter was even more Loyer with him scoring the Wolves first seven points and the lead began to grow.

Midway through the quarter he drove the baseline and took — and made — a jumper with his left hand.

By halftime, Loyer had scored 29 points on 10 of 14 shooting and 4 of 8 from 3-point range as the Wolves took a 49-20 advantage into the locker room.

Loyer added eight points in the third quarter and when CJ Robinson hit a 3 to end the quarter, Clarkston had an insurmountable 66-26 lead and the fourth quarter began with a running clock.

Robinson added 18 points for Clarkston and Taylor Currie, who signed with Wisconsin, had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
