(WZZM) - Now that the holiday shopping rush is over, some manufacturers have to find new ways to sell their product in January. This week we look at the Top 5 items to buy in January.  This doesn't mean you need to buy them, it just means if you might buy them sometime this year, chances are January is the cheapest month to do so.

#1 - Home exercise equipment.  According to Damon Bennett of Sears, January is absolutely the best time to buy.  "Because 95% of everybody's New Year's Resolution is to get fit. If you look at the difference between Christmas and after in January, you will see a significant price change."

A quick look around on this day at Sears we found some Elliptical Machines and Treadmills on sale nearly 40% off and many also included free delivery and free assembly.

#2 - Big screen televisions.  Scott Ohlman of Decker and Sons in Grand Rapids explains some of the reasoning behind it.

"There are promotions going on, maybe because of the football season, the playoffs, the Super Bowl, so there are definitely some sets that we have specials on for that event.  We're also getting close to the close-out season, because the new ones will start shipping in the next eight weeks."

#3 - Furniture. If you buy a large television,  it may take some furniture rearranging or new furniture to make that television fit.   New furniture styles hit the stores starting in February, so there is pressure to clear out inventory before the calendar turns to the next month.  If you buy a big screen television this month, you may save even more money by purchasing that new entertainment center while the calendar still says January.   July is also a good month for furniture, before August's new season delivery.

#4 - Linens. Have you ever heard of "January White Sales"?  The term has been around since 1878 and since then, January has traditionally been the best time to purchase bedding, towels and other linens.   John Wanamaker, a pioneer in the department store industry came up with January as the best time to sell "whites".   A quick look around for us found 40% off sheets at Sears on this one January day.

#5 - Summer toys. As we wait for the weather to get hot, many stores have hot sales on summer toys right now.  Boats and motorcycles, whether used or new can be found at their best discounts this month.  The simple concept of buying "out of season" will save you a lot of money on both.

One other great sale to look out for this month is winter clothing.  Believe it or not, spring wear will start arriving in stores next month, so many retailers are looking to move their Winter gear to make space.  This didn't crack our Top 5 however because you might even be able to get better deals on winter clothing next month.
